Young and the band The Promise of The Real\u00a0debuted an acoustic version<\/a>\u00a0of the song, \u201cA Rock Star Bucks A Coffee Shop,\u201d in Maui, Hawaii at\u00a0\u201cOUTGROW Monsanto,\u201d an event put on to\u00a0call attention to Monsanto\u2019s destructive practices in Hawaii<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Hawaii is considered the global epicenter for GMO seed testing,\u00a0according to Paul Towers<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0Pesticide Action Network<\/a>. Corporations based around the globe test and grow GMO seeds in Hawaii, which can be grown year-round in the islands\u2019 tropical climate, before shipping them to places like Iowa to sell to U.S. farmers and across the globe, according to\u00a0Towers. Earlier this month, a jury awarded 15 residents $500,000 in damages\u00a0for pesticide contamination from the biotech company\u00a0DuPont-Pioneer<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Young\u2019s new song is part of his upcoming album \u201cThe Monsanto Years,\u201d due out June 29. Young has been a food advocate for years. He\u2019s the co-founder of Farm Aid, and when it came to light that Starbucks was\u00a0supporting\u00a0Monsanto in fighting Vermont\u2019s GMO labeling law last fall, Young\u00a0publicly declared he would be boycotting Starbucks<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Starbucks says it has been wrongly accused of supporting the lawsuit, and the Grocery Manufacturers\u2019 Association, which brought the lawsuit, has said neither Starbucks nor Monsanto is participating in the lawsuit,\u00a0according to Reuters<\/a>. Still,\u00a0groups, such as GMO Inside, have been calling<\/a>\u00a0for Starbucks to\u00a0cut ties with the Grocery Manufacturers\u2019 Association, of which it\u2019s an affiliate member (and thus a financial contributor), and to buy only\u00a0GMO-free, organic milk.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
